Got my hands on some more gems from my grandmother's collection...more to come! The story behind this, one of my favorites, is pretty interesting.
USS Le Jeune - The back reads: "The ship Cliff [my grandfather] was on when I [my grandmother] met him - Came back to port after being hit with a suicide bomber." I grew up hearing the story of the kamikaze attack but I don't ever remember seeing a photo of the actual ship. ...And as I'm writing this it turns out the caption is incorrect and that was a different ship. However I do have a photo of that one somewhere too and I'll be sure to post it later.
BUT this ship has a really cool story too! According to Wikipedia, this ship was originally German and named "Windhuk,” and was sabotaged (like crazy severely sabotaged) by her crew when they learned she was to be interned after Brazil cut ties with Germany.
The US government bought the ship from Brazil in 1942 and renamed her "Lejeune (AP-74)" after USMC General John Archer Lejeune.
